Sauna is not a typical residential building, but a bathhouse, barrel sauna or wood-fired hot tub format that can be integrated into a private or commercial recreation area. The project includes several solutions: a timber sauna complex with a hot tub, a barrel sauna and a wooden steam room.

This format works where a house or guest complex needs a separate leisure function. It is not just another building on the site, but a place that sets the rhythm of relaxation: warming up, bathing or using the hot tub, stepping out onto the terrace, keeping firewood nearby and having a quiet area after the sauna. This is what distinguishes a well-designed bathhouse from a random timber structure.

Who is Sauna suitable for?

Sauna should be considered by owners of private plots, cottages, dachas, guest houses, holiday resorts, glamping sites and small tourist complexes. In a private scenario, this is a place for family holidays. In commercial – an additional service that increases the value of accommodation or makes the location more attractive for short visits.

If there is already a house on the plot, a sauna or wood-fired hot tub helps to form a separate wellness zone. If the plot is still being planned, it is logical to think through the location of the steam room, hot tub, terrace, paths, firewood storage, drainage and privacy from neighbours from the start. After installation, these things are harder to change.

For a holiday resort or glamping, such an object can work as a separate booking point. The guest comes not only to spend the night, but also to get a specific experience: a wooden sauna, a wood-fired hot tub, access to the terrace, the opportunity to cool down after a steam bath, a quiet area close to nature.

Formats: bathhouse with wood-fired hot tub and barrel sauna

A timber bathhouse complex with a wood-fired hot tub has a rectangular shape, a flat or single-pitched roof, an open terrace under a canopy and a round wooden hot tub on a podium. There is space for firewood nearby. Such a composition works well for a private yard or small recreational area where it is important to combine a steam room, relaxation and bathing in one scenario.

The second format is a barrel or oval sauna. It has an elongated shape, a natural timber structure and a roof made of dark bituminous shingles. Inside, there are timber walls, benches for sitting or lying down, an arched opening and a compact steam-room space. A barrel sauna is usually perceived as lighter than a rectangular building and is easier to fit into a demonstration site, yard or small recreation area.

A wood-fired hot tub complements the sauna with a different feeling. If the steam room gives dry or humid heat inside a timber volume, the hot tub works as an open-air bath. Its location should be planned carefully: safe access, comfortable decking, well-thought-out drainage and enough nearby privacy all matter.

Materials, design and appearance

Natural wood, in particular pine or larch, is used for such objects. For a rectangular bath, the roof can be made of profiled metal cladding, for a barrel sauna – from dark-coloured bituminous tiles. These are different solutions in appearance and operation, so a specific option should be chosen according to the area, budget, frequency of use and desired style.

Wood in a sauna is not just a decorative material. It comes into contact with heat, moisture, temperature changes, condensation and regular cleaning. Therefore, it is important to consider not only the type of wood, but also ventilation, protection of joints, correct operation of the stove or other heating element, safe clearances, floors, benches and places where moisture can accumulate.

We do not advise to perceive a sauna as “a small object that can be placed anywhere”. Yes, it is smaller than a house. But the requirements for safety, ventilation, electricity, water, chimney, firewood and access for maintenance are no less important here. Sometimes it is these details that determine whether the object will be comfortable after a year of active use.

Placement on the site

It is better to plan a sauna or wood-fired hot tub together with the general logic of the site. It should be clear where people arrive from, where they leave things, how they approach the hot tub, whether showers are nearby, how rest is organised after the steam room, where firewood is stored and whether smoke will disturb the main house or neighbours.

For a private plot, privacy is important. After the sauna, a person does not want to be immediately near the parking lot or in an open place in front of the road. Other things are important for a commercial complex: wear resistance, quick cleaning, clear navigation, safe flooring, external lighting and the ability to service the facility without crossing with guests.

At the design stage, it is worth discussing the type of wood, roof, stove or other heating element, ventilation, benches, doors, windows, lighting, decking, hot tub, drainage and firewood storage.

For private use, comfort, a view, quiet surroundings and convenient access to the terrace are often important. For commercial use, the priorities are material durability, simple maintenance, safe surfaces, quick ventilation, clear rules of use and the ability to clean the premises regularly without complex dismantling.

The cost depends on the format of the object, materials, stove, hot tub, roof, terrace, water, electricity, foundation or base, delivery and installation. If a residential building on the plot is planned in parallel, you can separately review how much modular houses cost, but the budget for a sauna or hot tub must be calculated according to its own specification.
